The challenge was to set a strategy in order for Qeelin to be perceived as a luxury brand by and for the Chinese people. What barriers did the Chinese market pose in the process of founding Qeelin? There were only very few boutiques of luxury brands on the Chinese market itself. Moreover in the 90's' luxury groups were focusing their Asian investments on Japan. Then there is the import tax – for years, buying a luxury good in China was much more expensive than buying the same item abroad. There are many other fields where they must first catch-up. Luxury is usually not the main priority for an emerging country. I'm more into sales, marketing and finance.Ĭhina has been booming for a while now, why has the luxury market taken so long to emerge? But I quickly found out that Dennis did not need my inputs at all! He has been doing a fantastic job since day one. To what extent do you involve yourself in the creative direction of the brand – do you get involved with the design? After having been a consultant for a couple of years, I decided to step down from my job as President of Ebel and launched Qeelin with Dennis. We kept in touch afterwards and, a few years later, he came to visit me in Switzerland to introduce Qeelin. I was the Head of Tag Heuer North Asia and he became a brand ambassador. He was an up and coming designer back then. I met Dennis Chan while living in Hong Kong in the 1990's. How did your working relationship with designer and Co-founder Dennis Chan come about? I always thought I would come back to fulfil my curiosity in China, it's people, it's culture. I had to leave the country unexpectedly due to the Tiananmen events. My first stay in China in the 80's was too short. You’ve worked all over the world, what drew you back to China? The interlayer spacing in the δ-MnO2 sample, however, was responsible for increasing the expected conversion due to the regeneration of oxygen/hydroxyl species from adsorbed water formed from the oxidation of formaldehyde on the catalyst surface.See the couple's showroom and examples of their individual and joint work (opens in new tab) Long-term stability tests showed that γ-MnO2 deactivated gradually with time potentially due to structural collapse of the hollow spheres. The catalysts were used for the complete catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde in dry air (100 ppmv GHSV: 30,000 h−1). ![]() All the samples had high BET surface areas between 104 m2 g−1 and 236 m2 g−1, hierarchical pore size distribution with high mesoporosity and the presence of oxygen vacancies for high mobility of oxygen species on the catalyst surface. Two different MnO2 crystal phases (γ- and δ-MnO2) could be obtained by making simple changes in the precursor addition protocols during synthesis. The hollow spheres were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, HRTEM, N2 adsorption, XPS and H2-TPR. ![]() After calcination of the core shell spheres at 300 ☌, hollow spheres were obtained following template removal by NaOH etching. The MnO2 coating on SiO2 was achieved by a newly devised low-temperature, controlled precipitation by redox (CPR) method which is based on the controlled redox reaction between KMnO4 and Mn(NO3)2 at 30 ☌. In this work, hollow MnO2 spheres were synthesized via a sacrificial templating method using SiO2 nanospheres as hard templates.
